Lakshmi, the goddess of good luck, is associated with Diwali. Diwali, or the Festival of Lights, is one of the most popular celebrations in India and can last over five days! Diwali celebrates the triumph of light over darkness.  

This  lamp, would be filled with an oil and burned like a candle at an altar.
